How to Create a Drop-Down Menu in Modern SharePoint (Guide)

Last Updated on October 20, 2023

Do you want to add a drop-down menu to your modern SharePoint site?

Fortunately, it’s super easy now to add a drop-down menu. On the downside, there’s really only one option to do this.

In this quick guide, I’ll walk you through creating a dropdown menu in modern SharePoint in only a few steps.

Let’s get started.

Step 1: Edit the navigation menu

Whether you’re on a team site or in a communication site, you will see an edit button on the navigation bar.

  • For team sites, the navigation bar is on the left side.
  • For other types of sites, the navigation bar is on the top of the page.

For this step, simply click on that “Edit” button:

Click on the edit link in line of the quick launch menu

Step 2: Add the parent menu item

Right after clicking the edit button, a panel will slide in from the left where you can edit the navigation links.

    From here:

    • Hover on the place where you want to enter the parent menu item
    • Click on the plus icon
Hover on the place where you want to add the parent menu and click the plus button

    To proceed:

    • Change the option to “Label
    • Enter the display name of the parent menu item
    • Click on the “OK” button
Enter the display name for the parent menu item

Step 3: Indicate the submenu items

Now that you have the parent menu item, it’s time to add the submenu items.

You can use the same steps explained earlier to add the submenu items that are not yet included in the navigation menu.

Once you have the submenu items in the navigation menu, follow these steps:

    • Click on the three dots beside those items
    • Click the “Make sub link” option
    • Click the “Save” button
Click the make sub link button for each sub menu item

After saving the changes, you will not have a drop down menu right in modern SharePoint.

    It looks like this:

I’m not seeing the option for Navigation under the gear within the SharePoint site. Do you need to be the owner of the site to change the dropdown menu to display vertically?
