How to Create a Modern Site Without a Group in SharePoint

Last Updated on March 12, 2024

Want to create a modern site that’s not connected to a group?

In this guide, I will show you how to easily create a non-connected SharePoint modern team site step-by-step.

Let’s get started.

Why create a modern SharePoint site without a group?

Some people may question why there are users who prefer to create a site that’s not connected to a group.

Well, the truth is, there are some advantages to it, such as:

  • Traditional site structure without the complexities of a group
  • When collaborative features are not needed
  • More granular permissions and access management

Some organizations want to make use of the modern interface and features but don’t want the complexities of Microsoft 365 groups.

Admins can also retain control over site management without the automatic provisioning of related Microsoft 365 resources.

It’s beneficial to specific use cases like departmental sites or intranet portals that need a direct, group-free configuration.

How to Create a Non-Connected Modern Team Site

You might be wondering where the button for this is since there’s no option for creating such sites on the start page.

However, if you go to the SharePoint admin center, you will find there is an option to create these non-connected modern sites.

Step 1: Go to the SharePoint admin center

If you know how to go to the SharePoint admin center directly, please proceed there first.

For those who don’t know how, start from any SharePoint Online site:

    • Click the app launcher on the upper-left corner
    • Click the admin button
admin button from the app launcher

From there, view all the admin center options in the left-hand panel.

    Then click the SharePoint option:

    Expand options and select SharePoint

You’re now in the SharePoint admin center.

    Step 2: Create a non-connected team site

From the home page of the admin center, go to sites > active sites.

Then click the create button from the top toolbar:

    Active sites > Create

This part here changed over the years. But what’s next is fairly the same.

On the bottom, you will see an option to browse more sites, click that button.

select another site like a non-connected team site

    Proceed to the next step.

    Step 3: Configure the site

Finally, on the template field, select the team site option (this refers to a team site without a group).

Then provide the details of the site like its name and then determine its primary administrator.

create the non-connected team site and give it a name

Note: Technically, a communication site isn’t connected with a group (unlike modern team sites), and it’s already a modern site.

The next page will allow you to configure the following:

    • Default site language
    • Time zone

After you configure them, click the create site button:

create the site after selecting the default language and time zone

Just wait for a few seconds or minutes until you get the notification for the new site. 🙂

Connecting a SharePoint Site to a Group

In case in the future you want to connect the site to a group, you can easily do so from the settings panel.

If you click on the gear icon on the upper-right corner of the page, there will be a connect to a new group option there.
